Forever By Chris Tomlin

Video

In lieu of a devotional today, I want to share this praise song, “Forever” by Chris Tomlin. Jeremiah 33: 10-11 describes the desolate place that is Jerusalem. But God will retore it to the sounds of gladness, where all people and animals will say,” Give thanks to the Lord Almighty, for the Lord is good; and his love endures forever! I encourage you to sing praises to the Lord with this jam!

Your love is better than life!

Standard

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. -Psalm 63:3-4

Last night in my women’s Bible study group we talked about the great power of Jesus and how daily we need to remind ourselves that His power is greater than any challenge that we are facing. There is nothing that we should fear when we believe. So true is that statement where power is replaced by love. With the beginning of February and such a love surrounded season, I will be posting on the theme of God’s love for us.

The psalmists affirms God’s love. It is better than life. No argument there. Life is hard and mostly overwhelming. There are unexpected twists and turns. Hurts, misunderstandings and heartache. But rejoice and breathe because God is better than all of that. Remember, the conclusion of the Bible study??

Every hurt that I have come through successfully on the other side was because of God and His love. This last year was really hard for me mentally and emotionally. My thesis work was getting me down. I felt that I was consistently failing and letting everyone down. I kept trying, and trying, and trying to no avail. I couldn’t shake the feelings of worthlessness. Finally, I found myself in this darkness angry with God and questioning where He was in all of it. I felt like a bad version of Job. I argued back with God. It didn’t make sense why He had opened the doors for me to go to graduate school, transfer and then leave me feeling helpless. I didn’t see the point in all of the pain and self-doubt. Especially since the person I was didn’t feel like me. But after enough grumbling, I decided that I had to surrender. I had to trust. I had to trust God’s love for me. It shouldn’t be hard for us to trust God’s love because it is unfailing but we still do sometimes. Don’t we? Like it is too good to be true.

I would go on further to say that God’s love is bigger than life. But because of His love, the promise to allow only glory to escape our lips is made. He deserves nothing less than our praise. Every moment, every day and every blessing comes from Him. We should have a hard time keeping our praises quiet because of all the overwhelming joy and overfilled cups. But when we are in those dark places or feel alone it is hard to acknowledge that we are lovable. We deserve love and we have a God that is ready to shower us with love. And a love that transcends any earthly love.

Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. -Psalm 63:3-4

Then you will be prosperous and successful

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. – Joshua 1:8 (NIV)

I love this verse! What Joshua is basically telling us is that we need to be deep in the Word. Of course the Book of Law is only a portion of the Bible but how could we really go wrong as Christians if we are intimately studying the Bible? God has provided us with wisdom and instructions for how to live. Not only are we instructed to read but we are told to meditate to get deeper in thought and understanding. In this fast paced world that we live in we hardly find the time to slow down and just place ourselves in the silent presence of the Lord. I know that I am guilty of it! I’d love to just sit in a lotus position with a lit candle in the silence of my living room sans distractions for just 20 minutes. How personal to sit and listen for the Lord’s voice! So what is stopping you?

One aspect of Christian living that I have begun to practice is the memorization of scripture verses. It is really challenging for me to focus and study the Bible when I’m not participating in a scheduled Bible study. Do you ever find that you feel more comfortable talking about a subject once you master its content? Well, isn’t that the same case for the Bible? Sure it is hard but what isn’t? As Joshua tells us there is only one outcome. We will be prosperous and successful!  Shouldn’t we take that chance?

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched —this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. – 1 John 1:1 (NIV)

I was always taught that the first verses of John which describe the Word is actually describing Christ. He [Christ] was there in the beginning during the creation. He was with God until sent to heaven for us. This statement is validating the truth of God’s Word. That the text of the Bible aren’t in fact stories but rather truths from those, as John writes, were there to witness Jesus and all that he accomplished on this earth. And that testimony in this single verse provides great evidence at that truth. For me, it makes me feel honored to read these ancient words that were archived by someone who was there, that saw, that touched and witnessed.

What about us? Are we witnesses as well? Do we think of ourselves as continuing the story? Granted, we aren’t working on chapters of the Bible but are we tuning our ears and casting our eyes on the living Word of God around us? Are acting as living witnesses to those around us?
